In 2004, S.S. Jenifer, 30, decided to start exploring the role and responsibility of an IAS officer, after receiving her admission letter to a new school from then Collector J. Radhakrishnan following the Kumbakonam school fire tragedy.

Twenty-two years later, on Thursday, Ms. Jenifer met the same officer, who had been her civil services icon, at the Tangedco head office, after achieving an important milestone in her pursuit of excellence in civil services.

Ms. Jenifer, who has been preparing for the civil services examination with the goal of becoming an IAS officer, cleared the TNPSC Group I examination this year.

Even though she will be eligible to become an IAS officer 13 years after clearing this examination, she is planning to continue working hard for the UPSC civil services examination to become an IAS officer through regular recruitment next year. She will soon begin work as Assistant Director in the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department in the State.

“Once I met with our District Collector Dr. J. Radhakrishnan after the fire tragedy at my school in 2004, I decided to become an IAS officer. I secured school admission without paying fees, received free school books and school uniforms. Having achieved this milestone 22 years after surviving the fire tragedy, I am able to feel the significance of the decisions made by Dr. Radhakrishnan, who tried to make decisions after analysing all aspects to protect our interests,” she said.

“We received psychosocial support after the fire tragedy. After completing my graduation in Mathematics, I started preparation [for the civil services exam] at the Manithaneyam IAS Academy and various other academies, including the All India Civil Services Coaching Centre. Dr. Radhakrishnan advised me to appear for the UPSC civil services exam. I am determined to clear the exam next year, as I have two more attempts remaining. I have appeared for the UPSC civil services examination seven times, but have not been able to clear it so far,” Ms. Jenifer said.

The meeting of the successful IAS aspirant with her civil services icon 22 years after she had her flash of inspiration during a tragedy was shared on social media on Thursday.

Dr. Radhakrishnan said: “It was a privilege to meet and wish Jenifer, whose life journey reflects extraordinary courage and determination. As a young child, she witnessed the tragic Kumbakonam school fire of 2004, a heartbreaking incident that claimed the lives of 94 children and left an indelible mark on Tamil Nadu. Having witnessed the aftermath of that tragedy first-hand, within weeks of taking charge as Thanjavur Collector, it was especially moving to meet her today along with her brother.”

“Despite immense challenges, Jenifer pursued her education with perseverance and purpose, successfully cleared the TNPSC Group-I examination, and has now been allotted the prestigious post of the Assistant Director of Panchayats. Her story is a powerful reminder that adversity need not define one’s future. Wishing her a fulfilling career in public service and every success as she gives back to society through her work,” he said.

Pointing to the determination of Ms. Jenifer, who worked hard consistently after the tragedy, Dr. Radhakrishnan said: “[It was] Lovely to interact with her and see her drive to serve the State. Have asked her to keep trying for civil services parallelly. Really feel-good meeting. In Group I TNPSC, she has been selected as AD Panchayat – a real story of resilience. She was one of the survivors. While 94 perished, about 600 were relocated to other schools.”
