Whirlwinds batter Kerala’s Thrissur, cause widespread damage and traffic disruptions

Whirlwinds lashed several parts of Thrissur district of Kerala on Tuesday (June 9, 2026), causing widespread damage to property, uprooting trees and disrupting traffic, even as heavy rain continued to batter the region.

The worst-affected areas include Villadam, Vilvattom, Cheroor and Kozhukkully. Strong winds uprooted trees at multiple locations, including near the Cheroor Village Office and Milma premises, leading to severe traffic congestion. Fire and Rescue Services personnel, along with local residents, are working to clear fallen trees and restore normalcy.

In Kozhukkully, the intense whirlwind caused significant damage, with the roofs of several houses blown off and thrown onto roads. Trees were uprooted across the area, triggering panic among residents. K. Rajan, MLA, visited the affected areas and assessed the situation. No casualties have been reported so far.

In another incident, a large teak tree was uprooted and fell near a building of Bhavan’s School at Poochatty in Nadathara, near the LKG section. Several vehicles belonging to parents parked nearby were damaged when the tree fell on them. No causalities reported.

Relief camps opened

Meanwhile, heavy rain continues across the district, worsening conditions. In Chalakudy, two relief camps have been opened, currently housing 29 people from seven families.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Thrissur for the next three hours (on Tuesday), warning of isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds of up to 40 kmph.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as adverse weather conditions persist.
