The Thanjavur police on Sunday (May 31, 2026) found the body of an AIADMK functionary, Mahendiran, 37, of Thiruppanandal, in an open ground at Pallur hamlet. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami on Monday (June 1) announced a solatium of ₹55 lakh to his family.

On investigation, the police discovered a video posted by the deceased on social media, stating he was upset over the recent developments in the AIADMK, including the splits and infighting within the party, and had thus decided to take the extreme step of ending his life.

The Thiruppanandal police have registered a case, and further investigation is under way.

Mr. Palaniswami, who visited the bereaving family at Thiruppanandal on Monday, announced a solatium of ₹30 lakh from the party fund and another ₹25 lakh via the party’s Thanjavur East District unit.
