Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday (May 27, 2026) directed officials to stay on high alert in view of the orange (weather) alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for several districts of Telangana, as widespread heavy rainfall lashed different parts of the State.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to accelerate paddy procurement operations at all centres and ensure additional arrangements to protect procured grain from rain damage. He emphasised that sufficient tarpaulins should be kept ready at procurement yards to prevent paddy stocks from getting wet. Officials were also told to shift tarpaulins from centres where procurement had already been completed to locations still handling arrivals.
With the IMD warning of strong gusty winds accompanying the rain, Mr. Reddy appealed to people to remain cautious and alert.
Farmers distressed
Farmers in several parts of the State have alleged that delays and negligence in paddy procurement are resulting in losses, with stocks getting soaked in the ongoing heavy rains. They demanded that the government procure rain-soaked paddy as well, expressing concern over the damage caused to grain stored at procurement centres.
Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed Mandamarri in Mancherial district on Tuesday night. The gusty winds reportedly blew away tarpaulin covers placed over paddy stocks at procurement centres, leaving the grain completely soaked. In another incident, lightning struck a palm tree at Kannala village in Bellampalli mandal, setting it on fire and triggering panic among residents in the surrounding area.
Telangana rain intensity
Several districts recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall during the 24-hour period ending 8 a.m. on May 27, according to data released by the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS).
Mahabubnagar district recorded the highest rainfall in the State, with Kothamolgara in Bhoothpur mandal receiving 112.3 mm of rain. Parpalli in Koilkonda mandal recorded 108.5 mm, while Bhoothpur registered 103.5 mm.
Amarachintha in Wanaparthy district received 89.8 mm rainfall, followed by Thimmajipeta in Nagarkurnool district with 88.8 mm. Kukuntla in Mahabubnagar recorded 79.3 mm and Mahabubnagar town (tehsil office area) received 77.3 mm.
Other places that recorded substantial rainfall included Janampeta in Musapet mandal of Mahabubnagar district with 76.5 mm, Naykal in Sangareddy district with 73.5 mm, and Shanigaram in Koheda mandal of Siddipet district with 72.8 mm.
Kaloor in Jogulamba Gadwal district recorded 68.3 mm rainfall, while Hathnoora in Sangareddy district received 68 mm. Angadi Kistapur in Siddipet district recorded 65.3 mm and Velgonda in Wanaparthy district received 64.3 mm rainfall.
Meanwhile, the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) said adverse weather conditions had damaged electrical infrastructure, resulting in power supply disruptions in several parts of Vikarabad town under the Vikarabad Circle.
In a post on X, TGSPDCL said field staff were working continuously to restore supply at the earliest and normalise electricity services. The utility also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to consumers.
