Two persons were arrested by Arakkonam Town police for possession of 10 kg ganja and 1,000 narcotic tablets (Tapentadol) near a new bus terminus in Ranipet on Tuesday.

The police said the arrested persons were identified as Munir Basha, 27, a resident of Triplicane (Chennai) and K. Arun, 21, a resident of Kovilambakkam near Tambaram. Initial inquiry revealed that based on a tip-off to Ranipet SP P. Sibin, special teams were formed to conduct surprise checks in public places.

Accordingly, a special police team was conducting a routine check near Arakkonam railway station when the team noticed the two suspects. Upon checking their bacgs, the police found ganja and narcotic tablets. Investigation found the duo bought ganja from peddlers in Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh whereas they placed an order for tablets with pharmacies in Mumbai. The tablets were sent by couriers to them.

The police said the duo was on their way to board a bus to Chennai to carry out the sale. A case was registered. Arrested persons were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
