A state-of-the-art Video Surveillance System (VSS) has been commissioned at the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) Bengaluru Railway Station at Majestic to strengthen railway security infrastructure and enhance passenger safety through advanced surveillance technologies.

According to South Western Railway (SWR), the new surveillance system became operational on May 13 and provides comprehensive monitoring coverage across the station premises. The surveillance network covers station entrances and exits, circulating areas, booking offices, reservation halls, concourses, platforms, subways, foot overbridges (FOBs), waiting halls and other vulnerable locations.

The SWR said that the system enables round-the-clock monitoring of passenger movement and station activities. As part of the project, 168 IP-based high-definition CCTV cameras compliant with Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) specifications have been installed to ensure reliable and high-quality surveillance throughout the station.

The VSS has been integrated with an advanced Video Management System (VMS), along with Video Analytics (VA) features, for intelligent monitoring and improved situational awareness. “The VA is capable of automatically detecting predefined security events and abnormal activities, thereby helping security personnel undertake proactive monitoring and ensure quicker response to incidents,” an official said.

In another security enhancement, the surveillance system has also been integrated with Facial Recognition Software (FRS) to improve identification and monitoring capabilities.

Railway officials said, “A database containing records of 1,086 criminals has been uploaded to the FRS platform to assist security agencies in identifying suspicious persons and strengthening surveillance measures.”

A modern 20 ft× 9 ft video wall has also been commissioned at the monitoring centre for real-time surveillance by Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel. The centralised monitoring arrangement is expected to help authorities supervise station activities more efficiently and respond swiftly during emergencies.

The railway officials further said that the entire VSS network and associated systems underwent a comprehensive cybersecurity audit by STQC Bengaluru and received a “Zero Vulnerability Report”, ensuring compliance with cybersecurity and information security requirements.

The release stated that in addition, all network switches deployed in the system were cleared through the Telecom Trusted Portal in accordance with Government of India guidelines for trusted telecom products.
