A Visakhapatnam court on Wednesday convicted a remand prisoner for escaping from the police custody in King George Hospital in 2025.

Visakhapatnam Chief Judicial Magistrate M. Pradeep Kumar sentenced Namala Nagaraju, 35, a native of NTR district, to one year of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹6,000. In case of non-payment, he would undergo one month of simple imprisonment, the court ordered.

According to Senior Assistant Public Prosecutor Mylapilli Adinarayana, Nagaraju was a remand prisoner in an attempt-to-murder case and was undergoing treatment in the prisoners’ ward at KGH.

On May 8, 2025, while the escort personnel permitted prisoners to have breakfast, Nagaraju allegedly escaped from the ward and fled from police custody.

Following a complaint lodged by Armed Reserve Head Constable Kona Ananda Rao, the I Town Traffic Police registered a case. Sub-Inspector K. Srinivasa Rao investigated the matter and filed a chargesheet. The prosecution established the charge under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, beyond reasonable doubt, the prosecutor said.
