Congress mulls helping Vijay form ‘secular’ govt in Tamil Nadu after he reaches out for support

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday (May 5, 2026) reached out to the Congress, a constituent of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, seeking support to form the government in Tamil Nadu, as the debutant emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly, winning 108 seats, falling short of a simple majority in the 234-member House.

The national party, which won five seats, hinted it could extend support. In New Delhi, All India Congress Committee general secretary K.C. Venugopal confirmed that the TVK has formally sought Congress backing.

According to TVK sources, Vijay and senior leaders of the party have sought an appointment to meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday (May 6, 2026).

Being the leader of the single largest party, Vijay is likely to either stake a claim or seek additional time to form government. It remains to be seen whether Vijay would seek the support of any other allies of the DMK or the AIADMK to prove his majority.
