Solthadi Nanda Kishore Nayak was employed as a facility manager in a tech firm in Bengaluru for 18 years. During COVID-19, he decided to return to his native Polali village in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, leaving desk jobs to take up farming on land that belongs to his parents, but was left uncultivated.

“I never considered agriculture as a career because it did not seem profitable. But during the lockdown, when people rushed to stock up on food, I realised how essential farming is for our survival,” says the 55-year-old, standing in his field. “I turned to organic farming.”
