Twenty-three people, including five women, were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the violence that erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district on Ambedkar Jayanti, the police said.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in Chehka Gunar village under the Sahavar police station limits when anti-social elements allegedly tried to block the route of a procession taken out by the Dalit community to celebrate Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary and pelted stones at police personnel, the police said.

The district police said an FIR has been lodged against 38 people, of whom 23 have been arrested. Heavy police deployment has been made in the village and the situation is now peaceful, according to the police.
