Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal, State president of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), on Saturday said candidates contesting elections seek votes from all sections of society and not on the basis of religion, amid intensifying political exchanges in the run-up to the Assembly polls.

Addressing a press conference in Kasaragod, he said it is natural for all political parties to expect support from every segment of the electorate.

“Every candidate requires vote from all sections. Our contest is not based on religion. Support is sought by approaching everyone in a democratic manner,” he said.

Responding to questions on the support of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), Mr. Thangal said candidates generally expect all favourable votes and that such support should not be viewed as a specific political understanding.

He clarified that there is no confusion within the United Democratic Front (UDF), adding that the front is moving forward unitedly and remains confident of victory. On remarks made by the Leader of the Opposition that the UDF is not seeking SDPI votes, he said those comments were likely based on his political experience.

Mr. Thangal also hit out at the Left Democratic Front (LDF) over the controversy surrounding ‘Kaumile Kutti’ mike announcement from an LDF campaign vehicle in Perambra. He alleged that the LDF was deliberately fuelling communal polarisation in the State as part of a calculated political move. He said the public would recognise attempts to divide society along religious lines.

As the campaign enters its final phase, he said development and public welfare should be the key issues, and accused some sections of trying to divert attention by raising controversies.
