Weight loss can be a frustrating process! Even if one does everything “right,” eats healthy, and exercises, weight loss can still be tough. Hormones play a vital part in how our bodies function, and this might be what has been missing from your weight loss journey. But according to dietitian and nutritionist Nmami Agarwal, the issue may not be your effort, but your hormones.
“Weight loss feels impossible? It may not be your willpower… ” It’s your hormones running the show,” she shared in a recent Instagram post.
Why hormones play a key role in weight loss
Many people believe that fat loss is simply about eating less and moving more. However, hormonal imbalances can significantly impact how the body stores and burns fat.
“It’s not just ‘eat less, move more’. The real key is to address the root cause, your hormones, so that your body can shed fat naturally,” she explained. Nmami shared in her caption, “So no, it’s not just “eat less, move more.” It’s: balance your hormones, and fat loss follows. Start with this: stabilise blood sugar, manage stress daily, and nourish your body consistently. Your fat loss will finally feel effortless, not forced.”
Three hormones that could be slowing your weight loss
Insulin: The fat-storage hormone
When insulin levels remain high, the body shifts into fat-storage mode.“When insulin levels stay high, your body stores more fat and struggles to burn it, even if your calories look perfect,” said Agarwal.
Cortisol: The stress hormone
Chronic stress and poor sleep can increase cortisol levels, making weight loss more difficult. “Elevated cortisol increases appetite and sugar cravings, which can make fat loss even harder,” she noted.
Estrogen: The balance hormone
Both high and low estrogen levels can disrupt the body’s balance. “Estrogen imbalance can lead to water retention and stubborn fat storage, making your weight loss journey more challenging,” she explained.
What you should focus on instead
Rather than only focusing on calories, Agarwal suggests a more holistic approach:
- Stabilise blood sugar levels
- Manage stress daily
- Nourish your body consistently
“Balance your hormones, and fat loss will follow. It will feel effortless, not forced,” she said.
