Four persons were arrested by Kannamangalam police near Arani town in Tiruvannamalai on Tuesday for stealing gold ornaments from an elderly woman.

The arrested persons were identified as K. Rajkumar, 37, V. Rajasekar, 26, B. Kamal, 26, and R. Suriya, 24. Except Suriya, who is a native of Sivaganga district, other persons belong to Padavedu village in Tiruvannamalai.

Police said the victim S. Kanaga, 60, a resident of Kannamangalam, was alone in her house after her children went to watch a bull race event in the nearby village on January 17. The gang barged into the house. They tied Kanaga in a chair and robbed her 25 sovereigns of gold jewellery before they fled the house.

On being informed, Kannamangalam police inspected the house. A case was registered. Later, during routine patrol, a police team found the gang in an old building in the area. The gang was brought to Kannamanagalam police where they told police that they robbed the house.

Police recovered lost jewellery. Arrested persons were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
