GUWAHATI

Less than a month after its former State president Bhupen Kumar Borah switched over to the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Assam Congress lost one of its three MPs on Tuesday.

Pradyut Bordoloi, who represented the Congress from the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, submitted his resignation to party president Mallikarjun Kharge. The latter’s office said it did not receive the letter.

However, Subrata Borah, the All India Congress Committee in charge of Assam for the OBC wing, said Mr. Bordoloi’s resignation was very unfortunate. “He is the seniormost and most experienced leader of the Assam Congress at present,” Mr. Borah wrote on a social media platform, adding that State party president Gaurav Gogoi and AICC general secretary in charge of Assam Jitendra Singh went to Mr. Bordoloi’s residence to dissuade him.

Mr. Bordoloi was reportedly feeling sidelined in the party for months. The immediate trigger was the alleged humiliation by Mr. Gogoi over the selection of the candidate for the Laharighat Assembly constituency. Laharighat, in central Assam’s Morigaon district, is a segment of the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat that Mr. Bordoloi represents.

“With an overwhelming sense of sadness today, I hereby tender my resignation from all posts, privileges, and the primary membership of the Indian National Congress,” his resignation letter read.

Two days ago, Mr. Bordoloi wrote another letter to Mr. Jitendra Singh, outlining why he was not in favour of renominating Asif Mohammad Nazar from Laharighat.

The MP alleged that he and an associate were attacked by a group of armed men in Nagaon district’s Dhing area in April 2025. He said the group was led by Emdadul Islam, a close associate of Mr. Nazar.

There are speculations that Mr. Bordoloi could join the Bharatiya Janata Party and contest the Assembly election. This has put a question mark on the fate of his son, Prateek Bordoloi, who is the Congress candidate from the Margherita Assembly seat in eastern Assam.

Almost simultaneously with the senior Bordoloi, Mankachar MLA Mohammed Aminul Islam resigned from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). The party, however, said it had suspended Mr. Islam from its membership for six years for “misconduct and gross violation” of its principles.

Mr. Islam is the fourth MLA who resigned from the AIUDF in poll-bound Assam. The others are Karim Uddin Barbhuiya (Sonai seat), Abdul Aziz (Badarpur), and Zakir Hussain Laskar (Hailakandi).
