The State Cabinet on March 13 approved the Kerala State Film Policy, which was prepared after discussions with stakeholders in the film industry, ideas shared at the Film Conclave and opinions gathered from the public. The comprehensive policy includes 92 recommendations and suggestions.

Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian said the policy aims to ensure greater job security and gender justice at all stages from film production to exhibition. He added that constructive feedback from the public had also been taken into account while framing the policy.

He said the policy will be implemented by protecting the interests of individuals from all sections related to cinema, and will mark a decisive step in Kerala’s cultural history. He added that the policy will pave the way for elevating the Malayalam film industry to global standards while ensuring safe working conditions and promoting technological advancements.

The Film Conclave organised by the Culture department last August witnessed discussions on a host of issues related to the Malayalam film industry, ranging from those related to contractual agreements and minimum wages to gender justice, inclusivity, and even the high price of food and beverages in cinema theatres.

With regard to women’s safety on film sets, participants stressed the need to improve the functioning of the internal complaints committee and to clearly define the concept of workplace. They also demanded safe accommodation and the provision of basic facilities for women during the shooting period.
