The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is setting up south India’s largest registered vehicle scrapping facility (RVSF) at Kandanakam near Edappal in Malappuram district in partnership with the South India Metal Corporation (SIMCO).

Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar laid the foundation stone for the KSRTC-SIMCO project on Friday (February 20, 2026), describing it as a milestone in Kerala’s vehicle recycling sector.

The Edappal RVSF will cater to the districts of Palakkad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Idukki. Similar centres are planned for northern and southern Kerala in collaboration with Steel Industries Kerala Ltd (SILK).

Mr. Ganesh Kumar said the project would help curb illegal and environmentally harmful vehicle scrapping practices in the State. Once operational, the Edappal facility will ensure that vehicle recycling in central Kerala is carried out scientifically and with full approval from Central and State government departments, he added.

The ₹30-crore centre is being constructed on three acres of land adjacent to the KSRTC regional workshop at Edappal. It will have the capacity to scrap up to 100 metric tonnes of vehicles per day using scientific methods. The project is expected to be completed within eight months and is projected to generate an annual turnover of around ₹300 crore.

SIMCO director Binu Krishnan said the Edappal RVSF would be the largest of its kind in south India, adding that authorised collection centres would soon be opened across central Kerala.

SIMCO directors Sandeep Krishnan and Fazil Habib said vehicle owners scrapping their vehicles through RVSF centres would receive a fair and transparent market price and become eligible for tax concessions and other Central government benefits when purchasing a new vehicle under the Certificate of Deposit (CoD) system.
