At least 8 persons were admitted to various hospitals with symptoms of anuria (kidneys failing to produce urine) reportedly after consuming adulterated milk at Laala Cheruvu and Chowdeswari Nagar areas in Rajamahendravaram city on Sunday (February). An 80-year-old woman died in the city on Sunday with symptoms of anuria, according to sources.

The incident came to light after KIMS hospital alerted district administration that it had admitted four elderly people with symptoms of anuria.

“A post-mortem examination will be conducted to identify the exact cause of death [of the elderly woman]. Blood samples are being collected from those who consumed the milk,” said East Godavari District Collector Kirthi Chekuri. The District Collector deployed special teams to speed up the medical investigation into the cases.

In an official release, District Medical and Health Officer K. Venkateswara Rao said eight persons were found to be suffering from anuria and they had reportedly consumed milk bought from the same vendor.

Meanwhile, food safety officials collected samples of the milk. Special medical camps have also been set up in the respective areas.

In a late night release, Health and Family Welfare Commissioner G. Veerapandian said the department was on alert following the suspected anuria cases. He said the department was keenly watching the situation in Rajamahendravaram and was collecting milk and water samples and other materials from the affected areas.

Medical camps were arranged for, and Rapid Response Teams were conducting field-level surveys. He said the condition of the eight affected persons undergoing treatment at hospitals was stable.
