A total of 89 double bedroom houses were distributed to victims of serious crimes registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act at an official programme held on Wednesday at the Malkajgiri Commissionerate in Neredmet.

The event was presided over by Minister for Scheduled Castes Development, Tribal Welfare, Minorities Welfare and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Adluri Laxman Kumar. Among those present were Chairman of the Telangana SC Commission Bakki Venkataiah, Malkajgiri Police Commissioner K. Avinash Mohanty, Medchal–Malkajgiri District Collector Mikkilineni Manu Choudari and Chairperson of Telangana Samskruthika Sarathi Vennela Gaddar along with commission members and senior officials.

Officials stated that this marked the second phase of the initiative. In July 2025, 65 victims had been allotted double bedroom houses under a similar programme.

A detailed exercise was undertaken to scrutinise cases of rape and murder involving SC/ST victims registered between 2014 and 2025 within the jurisdiction of Malkajgiri district, which includes areas under the Malkajgiri and Cyberabad commissionerates. Of the 235 grievous cases identified during this period, a preliminary list of the most vulnerable victims was prepared based on socio-economic indicators and the severity of trauma suffered.

Officials said victim compensation, particularly for vulnerable communities, plays a critical role in restoring social standing and dignity. During investigations, police officers often witness the severe socio-economic and psychological distress endured by victims. Beyond filing charge sheets and ensuring prosecution, the focus has been extended to holistic rehabilitation measures, including financial assistance, employment facilitation and provision of housing to help victims rebuild their lives with security and self-respect.

Officials emphasised that housing support not only provides shelter but also restores social identity, offers psychological stability and aids reintegration into mainstream society.

Following rigorous scrutiny, the proposals were formally approved by the District Collector. A stakeholder meeting was subsequently convened to finalise eligible beneficiaries and forward recommendations for allotment of the houses.
