The minority BJP government at the Centre will not survive for long, contended Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in Krishnagiri on Sunday.
Mr. Stalin, who distributed welfare assistance to beneficiaries at an official function, reflected on the track record of his government and blamed the Union government for not being able to fulfil certain key electoral promises. “Our Ministers Thangam Thennarasu, Govi. Chezhiaan, and S.S. Sivasankar clearly said at a press meet in Chennai that out of the 505 election promises made by the DMK, 364 had been fulfilled and 40 are under consideration by the State government. Apart from this, Thirty-seven schemes are under the consideration of the Union government and 64 schemes were not implemented due to financial constraints,” he said.
“Our promises such as obtaining exemption for Tamil Nadu from NEET-based medical admissions have not been fulfilled. The DMK fought various legal battles for this. During the 2024 Parliamentary election, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also promised to grant an exemption from NEET for Tamil Nadu [if the Congress-led INDIA bloc was voted to power]. But, the BJP came to power with the support of its allies. The minority BJP Union government will not survive for long. One day, a government supporting Tamil Nadu will come to power at the centre,” Mr. Stalin contended.
According to Mr. Stalin, who interacted with the public on his way from the Hosur airstrip to the event venue, the people’s support for the DMK government was on the rise, and opposition parties claimed that the DMK had not fulfilled its election promises as they were unable to accept this fact. The DMK government had even implemented schemes such as the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme, Naan Mudhalvan, Pudhumai Penn Thittam, Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam, and Tamil Pudhalvan that were not listed on its election manifesto. “Various media outlets and YouTube channels from north Indian States are publishing news by researching the schemes of the DMK government, he said. “But a group that had no principles or ideologies is spreading false information about the ruling government and indulging in cheap politics,” he alleged.
Responding to Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s criticisms of the DMK government and his foreign visits, Mr. Stalin said during the AIADMK regime, industries from Tamil Nadu went to nearby States. But now the DMK government had changed that scenario. “While Mr. Palaniswami was the Chief Minister, he went to foreign countries to attract investments and also conducted a Global Investors’ Meet. But most of the agreements did not fructify,” he said.
But now, 78% of the memoranda of understanding signed by the DMK government have been realised, and the rest will be realised soon, Mr. Stalin said.
He added: “I will make Tamil Nadu a developed State, not only at the national level but also at the South Asia level. In the 2026 Assembly election, the DMK will win, and Tamil Nadu will grow further.”
