Amid a political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the BJP over the proposed hike in Namma Metro fares, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Monday announced that metro fares would be recalculated afresh using the formula followed by the Delhi Metro.

The announcement came a day after the BMRCL put the fare hike, scheduled to come into effect on Monday, on hold following public protests and political pressure.

Mr. Shivakumar asserted that it was the State government that had taken the decision to halt the fare revision, rejecting claims by BJP leaders that the Union government had intervened to stop the hike. Addressing a press conference at Vidhana Soudha, Mr. Shivakumar said, “A letter purportedly sent by the Centre directing BMRCL to defer the fare hike has no legal value.”

“There is no politics on this issue. The Union government has no authority to issue directions or interfere in metro fare matters. I have instructed officials to freshly calculate fares based on the formula followed by the Delhi Metro,” he said.
