The Kochi City police have registered 300 cases over alleged violation of traffic rules by private buses in three days in a special drive.
As many as 156 cases were registered over various traffic offences including zebra crossing violation, obstructive parking, and parking on footpath in the drive held from January 31 to February 2, according to the police.
During the operation, 13 cases were booked for driving in a dangerous manner on public roads under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, while five cases were registered under the Motor Vehicles Act for overspeeding. Additionally, the police booked 43 cases against private buses operating with doors open, 11 cases against drivers not wearing uniforms, nine cases for traffic signal violations, 53 cases against buses that failed to stop at designated bus stops, and 10 cases for overtaking from the left side, the police said.
The drive, led by District Police Chief (Kochi City) Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, was conducted in the wake of frequent complaints against private bus operators for alleged rash driving. Recently, an eight-year-old boy returning from a shop was killed after being hit by an allegedly overspeeding private bus at Chellanam. The accident reportedly occurred when the bus was attempting to overtake a two-wheeler.
