Gajula Sowmya, a 25-year-old Telangana excise constable who sustained serious injuries in an alleged attack by ganja smugglers in Nizamabad, passed away at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, on the night of Saturday, January 31.

A bulletin issued by NIMS late Saturday night said, “All necessary medical interventions and advanced life-support measures were provided by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists. Despite sustained and best possible efforts, the patient could not be revived and was declared deceased on 31st January 2026 at 9.41 p.m. NIMS extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and conveys its sincere sympathies during this hour of profound grief.”

Sowmya was initially brought to NIMS in the early hours of January 25 and was admitted to the Emergency Department before being shifted to the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit. An earlier health bulletin issued on January 28 stated that she had arrived on ventilatory support. At the time of admission, she had a Glasgow Coma Scale score of E3VTM1 and was sedated. Her pulse rate was 140 bpm and her blood pressure was 60/40 mmHg while on noradrenaline support.

The January 28 bulletin noted that while Sowmya remained critical, some clinical improvements were noted over time. A subsequent health bulletin issued on January 30 said her condition continued to remain critical. She was unconscious and on life-support, with significantly affected liver function leading to very high ammonia levels. Her blood pressure remained unstable, requiring increasing medication support. She continued to receive kidney support through dialysis and remained on mechanical ventilation, though oxygen levels were satisfactory.

In the final health bulletin issued on the morning of January 31, doctors stated that her condition had become extremely critical. She was hemodynamically unstable with persistently low blood pressure requiring very high levels of medication support. Despite maximal medical efforts, her blood pressure remained difficult to stabilise.
