Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday (January 31, 2026) urged the centre for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe in the death of a National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant in Patna on January 11.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary made the confirmation by writing a post on X.

“Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar ji has urged the Government of India to hand over the investigation of the NEET student’s murder case in Patna (Case No.- 14/26) to the CBI. The incident must be thoroughly uncovered in a transparent manner,” Mr. Choudhary wrote on social media platform X.

The decision came a day after the parents of the girl met Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar at his residence alleging that the police was trying to hush up the matter by denying sexual assault and claiming that it was a case of suicide.

High drama was seen outside the residence of DGP

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted on January 16 on the orders of the State government soon after the aspirant’s post-mortem report dated January 12 surfaced in the public domain, which noted “physical injuries and marks of violence on the body” and stated that “sexual violence cannot be ruled out”.

On January 25, Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) issued a press note stating that on 10.1.26, the family members of the deceased provided some of the clothes of the girl to the police, which were seized. Following the legal procedure, it was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination.

It further stated, “The FSL is preparing a DNA profile of the same. Accordingly, as part of further investigation, the DNA will be matched with that of the arrested accused as well as other suspect individuals identified by the SIT.”

So far police have taken the blood sample of at least 25 people including the arrested people in the case. The FLS report has confirmed that the semen belongs to persons aged between 18 and 21 years old.

Since day one, the parents of the victims were saying that their daughter was sexually assaulted. Following the incident, the owner of the girl’s hostel was arrested.

On Friday (January 30), while speaking to the media, the mother of the girl alleged that the investigation was not being conducted properly and that the police were not acting impartially. The deceased’s mother also said that she did not see any prospect of justice being served. She claimed that attempts were being made to suppress the case at multiple levels.

The girl staying in a private hostel was found unconscious in her room on January 6, under the Chitragupt Nagar police station area in Patna earlier this month and died during treatment at a private hospital after five days.
