The Nagarkurnool police have registered a case following allegations that as many as 100 stray dogs were killed in Thimmaipally village of Charakonda mandal, marking yet another incident in a series of mass dog killing cases reported across Telangana.

According to police officials, the complaint, filed by an animal rights activist, alleged mass killing of stray dogs in the village. However, during preliminary verification, police said they were able to recover the carcasses of only 10 to 15 dogs so far. The recovered carcasses were sent for postmortem examination to determine the cause of death .

Based on the complaint, a case was registered on Tuesday against the village sarpanch, the panchayat secretary and others. The accused were booked under Section 325 read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 11 (1)(a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which deals with killing or poisoning of animals by multiple persons.

This development comes amid a series of mass dog killings across several districts of Telangana in December last year and this January. Activists claimed the cumulative number of dogs allegedly killed across the State has now touched nearly 1,200. Further investigation is underway.
