The Thiruvananthapuram District and Sessions Court has agreed to hear an appeal filed by disqualified MLA and former Transport Minister Antony Raju in an evidence tampering case.

The court will hear the arguments in Mr. Raju’s petition on February 2.

The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Nedumangad, had earlier this month found the former Left Democratic Front legislator guilty of forging and planting material evidence in the two-decades-old case and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment and a fine of ₹10,000.

The sentence was pronounced in the case in which Mr. Raju was accused of tampering with an Australian national’s undergarment that had been seized as material evidence in a narcotics case.

Mr. Raju, the second accused, had filed an appeal seeking that his sentence be overturned.

The first accused, K.S. Jose, a former court clerk, too had been sentenced to three years of imprisonment.

The court had, however, granted Mr. Raju bail until the disposal of his appeal as the sentence was less than seven years.
