Anantapur district in-charge Collector C. Vishnu Charan said that road safety was every individual’s responsibility and motorists should compulsorily wear a helmet while riding a vehicle and maintain discipline to avoid accidents.

A rally was taken on this regard to create awareness on road safety from the Municipal office to Clock Tower in Anantapur on Thursday. Mr. Vishnu Charan flagged off the rally, which saw the participation of IPS trainee Ashwin Manideep, Deputy Transport Commissioner (DTC) Veerraju and other officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vishnu Charan said that month-long road safety awareness programmes were being held and 96 programmes were organised in the past 21 days in the district. More than 5,000 students and 2,000 drivers and motorists participated in these programmes.

Mr. Vishnu Charan said that the Transport department officials identified 37 blackspots in the district and have taken up necessary repair works to rectify them. Police have also taken action those violating rules and over 2,000 cases have been registered against those found not wearing a helmet or seatbelt while driving. Similarly, 30-35 drunk and drive cases have been filed.

He said that the Transport department also conducted eye tests and health camps for drivers as part of the awareness programmes.

Meanwhile, DTC Veerraju said that nearly 360 people were losing lives in road accidents every year and majority of them were between the age group of 18-25 years. “We have been creating awareness on road safety all these days. Now, we will start taking tough action against violators,” he said.
