The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the period for filing claims and objections up until January 30, in connection with the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik said on Monday (January 19, 2026).

The Election Commission has urged eligible citizens to make use of the extended period to submit their claims and objections relating to the electoral rolls within the stipulated time frame.

The Commission had in October last year announced the conduct of the SIR of electoral rolls with reference to January 1 this year as the qualifying date in Tamil Nadu. On December 19 last year, the draft electoral rolls were published and the period for filing claims and objections was initially fixed between December 19 last year and January 18 this year.

The release issued on Monday said the Commission considered all relevant factors, and in exercise of the powers conferred by the proviso to Rule 12 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, decided to extend the period for filing claims and objections up until January 30.
