When the United Democratic Front (UDF) forms the government in Kerala, it will be a people’s government, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K.C. Venugopal has said.

Opening ‘Vijayaravam’, an event to celebrate the front’s victory in the recent local body polls, in Kozhikode on Saturday, he said the UDF would bring about major policy changes, ensuring employment for the educated youth, thus encouraging them not to seek greener pastures. He added that the UDF would introduce better sports infrastructure in the State.

“Youngsters are leaving the State because they cannot find well-paying jobs here, and with the Left Democratic Front [LDF] government championing nepotism, they have even more reason to do so,” Mr. Venugopal said, adding that the CPI(M) was on the verge of extinction owing to its ideological depletion. “The Chief Minister speaks as if he is a Sangh Parivar spokesperson. He, along with his party, is spreading communalism,” he alleged.

He lauded the district unit of the UDF for surviving the LDF’s desperate attempt to keep it out of power and strengthen the BJP through unscientific delimitation of wards. “The UDF’s victory can be attributed not just to the hard work of its leaders but to the pain inflicted on the people by the LDF’s second term in power,” Mr.Venugopal said.

In his address, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty said the people of Kerala would not allow the LDF to continue in power. “The CPI(M) does not even have a milestone to claim after 10 years in power,” he said, adding that UDF was the solution to all issues faced by Kerala.

UDF convenor K. Balanarayanan presided over the event. MPs M.K. Raghavan and Shafi Parambil and District Congress Committee president K. Praveen Kumar were present.
