Deputy Controller of Legal Metrology department B. Manohar on Thursday (January 01) asked consumers to be vigilant while buying gold in shops in the backdrop of skyrocketing of the price of yellow metal.

Speaking to The Hindu, he said that the department directed all shops to use only electronic weighing machines with only one milligram deviation while weighing gold. He said that the consumers should insist on the exclusion of weight of the precious stone since their cost was less compared to the gold ornaments.

Mr. Manohar said that the department had been conducting inspections in gold shops, petrol bunks, fertilizer shops and others regularly. He said that 1612 cases were booked between April and November and ₹68.6 lakh collected as compounding fee from traders. Assistant Controller of the department P.V. Ranga Reddy and other officials have been suggested to conduct inspections in all areas of Vizianagaram district to make traders follow rules and regulations.
