Veteran Kerala Congress leader and former legislator P.M. Mathew passed away in the early hours of (December 30, 2025) Tuesday. He was 75.

He had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Pala, Kottayam, for the past week following liver-related ailments and breathed his last around 3.15 am.

Mr. Mathew, who had represented the Kaduthuruthy Assembly constituency from 1991 to 1996, was serving as the General Secretary of the National Farmers Party (NFP), an organisation formed in May 2025. Closely associated for long with Kerala Congress (M) leader K.M. Mani, he later shifted to the Kerala Congress (Jacob) faction before eventually returning to the Mani group. However, he had largely stayed away from mainstream politics in recent years. During the 2024 Lok Sabha election period, once again aligned with the United Democratic Front.

He had served as chairman of ODEPC and vice chairman of KSFE. He also held positions on various advisory committees and was a member of the Kerala University Senate, besides serving on several other boards.

His mortal remains will be brought to his residence at Arunassery, Kaduthuruthy, by 5 pm on Tuesday. The funeral service will begin at the residence at 3 pm on Wednesday, followed by the last rites at St Mary’s Church, Kaduthuruthy (Thazhathupally).

He is survived by his wife, Kusumam Mathew, a retired Sub Registrar, two daughters, Anu P. Mathew and Anju Mathew, and a son, Arun Mathew.
