Telangana government is undertaking programs to increase the per capita income of farmers in the State to ₹12,53,733 per annum by 2047. It is planning to expand fruit cultivation from the current 4.5 lakh acres to 12 lakh acres, vegetable cultivation to 10 lakh acres, and spice crop cultivation to 6 lakh acres, said K. Surendra Mohan, Secretary, Telangana State Agriculture and Cooperation Department.

During a visit to Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University, headquartered in Mulugu, Siddipet district on Thursday (December 25, 2025), he spoke about setting up facilities to augment farming, pick up agri produce, storage, cleaning and other facilities.

To promote vegetable cultivation, the government will establish collection centers to procure vegetables directly from farmers, and also increase marketing infrastructure. It is also preparing to provide facilities with a cold chain capacity of 50 lakh tonnes and an additional warehousing capacity of 50 lakh metric tonnes. Mr. Surendra said that they are preparing to set up vapor heat treatment and irradiation treatment centers near the international airport to increase the export of mangoes and other fruits primarily cultivated in the State.

Citing increase in consumption, the Agriculture Secretary said that there is a need to increase cultivation area of ​​millets by 10 lakh acres and pulses by another seven lakh acres. And, the target for oil palm cultivation area is to increase it from the current 2.7 lakh acres to 12 lakh acres by 2047, and also to achieve a five-fold increase in mulberry production and an eight-fold increase in tussar silk production in the sericulture sector. 

The government is ready to support the plans by expanding micro-irrigation to 40 lakh acres and increasing farm power capacity to 9 kilowatts per hectare. 

Vice-Chancellor of the Horticultural University, Danda Raji Reddy, said that establishing a local market every 50 kilometers would increase the area under vegetable cultivation. He explained the plans to extensively promote grafted vegetable plants and trellis-based vegetable cultivation. 

The program was attended by TS Oil Fed Officer on Special Duty Kiran Kumar; University Consultant K. Veeranjaneyulu; Technical Advisor Sunandini; Head of the Vegetable Research Station, D. Anita Kumari; Professor Pidiga Saidiah; Horticulture Department Joint Director, Sarojini; Siddipet District Horticulture Officer Suvarna; scientists, and students.
