The government has embarked on an aggressive expansion of the State’s road and infrastructure network, unveiling a series of transformative projects, including new expressways, elevated corridors, and enhanced road connectivity from cities to villages.
The Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department has reported unprecedented progress over the last two years. Single-lane roads are being widened into double lanes, and double lanes into four-lane corridors to support growing economic activity.
With major investments running into thousands of crores, the administration aims to position Telangana as one of the top-performing States in the country, said Roads and Buildings Minister Komtireddy Venkata Reddy, adding that the government’s priority is to ensure seamless road connectivity from every mandal headquarters to district centres.
The R&B Department currently manages 29,075 km of road network. Since the formation of the present government, 239 works worth ₹6,617.86 crore have been approved, covering 1,659 km of roads and 62 bridges. The plan includes expanding 1,383 km of single-lane roads into double lanes and 242 km into four-lane roads.
According to the Minister, the government has completed 514.80 km of road expansion, construction of 69 bridges, and 617.5 km of road restoration. Recently, four major projects, with the assistance of the Centre, covering 30.96 km in Amberpet, BHEL, Aramghar–Shamshabad, and Nirmal–Khanapur at a cost of ₹865.64 crore were inaugurated.
Mr. Venkata Reddy says under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s Vision 2047, the government has announced massive projects worth ₹60,799 crore, giving a significant push to infrastructure creation.
A major component is the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), under which 419 roads across 32 packages are being upgraded at a cost of ₹11,399 crore. Notably, contractors under this model must maintain the roads for 15 years, ensuring sustained quality.
To reduce accidents on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada NH-65, projects worth ₹288 crore have been approved to fix black spots. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is underway to convert this stretch into an 8-lane expressway at an estimated ₹10,400 crore.
The Regional Ring Road (RRR) will be considered a national highway with the project expected to cost ₹36,000 crore. Work is progressing on several upcoming mega corridors including Hyderabad–Amaravati–Machilipatnam Greenfield Expressway for which tenders are issued for DPR preparation.
The ₹8,000-crore project from Mannanur to Srisailam, once completed, will reduce travel distance by 53 km and save nearly three hours, besides eliminating ghat-road hardships. Telangana will bear 33% of the project cost.
New airports in Warangal (Mamnoor), Adilabad, and Ramagundam have been pushed, with cargo services at Warangal airport set to begin by the end of next year. Plans are also underway to construct ropeways at Yadagirigutta, Hanumanconda in Nalgonda, Nagarjunasagar, and Ramagirikhota to boost tourism.
In just two years, the government has executed construction works covering over one crore square feet at an estimated ₹7,000 crore, surpassing the previous government’s 10-year record in the R&B sector, claim officials.
The major ongoing and upcoming projects include the new High Court Complex at Rajendranagar – ₹2,583 crore, District Court complexes across 12 districts – ₹972 crore, new Osmania General Hospital at Goshamahal – ₹2,700 crore, Medical College at Kodangal – ₹200 crore, and Veterinary Science College – ₹200 crore.
