PM asks BJP MPs from West Bengal to keep SIR ‘straightforward’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (November 3, 2025) urged BJP Members of Parliament from West Bengal to keep the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the State “straightforward”, asking them not to let it become a subject of controversy.

During Parliament sessions, the Prime Minister meets BJP MPs in State-wise groups. After meeting his party MPs from Assam on Tuesday, he met with West Bengal MPs the following day. With West Bengal going to the polls soon, Mr. Modi reportedly told MPs that the SIR was only to ensure that eligible voters are included in the electoral rolls and the ineligible ones removed.

The Opposition has been continuously protesting the ongoing SIR in 12 States and a debate on electoral reforms with a reference to the SIR is scheduled to be held in both Houses of Parliament next week.

‘Focus on ground level work’

Mr. Modi also reviewed local issues of interest in West Bengal, asking MPs to focus on ground level work, and reminding them of the BJP’s growth in the State so that it is now occupying the primary Opposition space in the State. He also enquired about the recent attack on BJP leader Khagen Murmu.

The delegation of MPs included West Bengal BJP chief Shamik Bhattacharya, and Union Ministers Shantanu Thakur and Sukanta Majumdar. West Bengal is expected to elect a new Assembly early next year and the BJP has appointed Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav as the party’s poll in-charge for the State, along with former Tripura Chief Minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Deb as co-incharge.
