Amidst the tussle for the chief minister’s post and sharing of power after completion of the first half of the five-year term of the Congress government in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D.K. Shivakumar held a breakfast meeting on December 2 at the residence of the latter at Sadashivanagar in Bengaluru.

The meeting lasted about 45 minutes.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called on Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar as part of efforts to end the controversy over a 'power-sharing agreement' between the two, in the run-up to the winter session of the State legislature, in Bengaluru on December 2, 2025.

This is the second breakfast meeting between two leaders in less than four days. They met at the chief ministers’ residence for breakfast on November 29 in Bengaluru, after the party high command directed both leaders to resolve their differences ahead of the winter session of the State legislature in Belagavi, which would commence on December 8, and the Parliament session that commenced on December 1.

After the meeting, both leaders agreed that they would abide by the high command’s decision on leadership change in Karnataka.

On December 2, D. K. Shivakumar and his brother D. K. Suresh, former MP, welcomed the chief minister.

Kunigal MLA H. D. Ranganath, a close relative of Mr. Shivakumar, also joined them for breakfast.

Though the meeting was largely seen as a ‘courtesy call’, the chief minister’s visit to the deputy chief minister’s residence is believed to have brought Mr. Shivakumar to the centre stage of Karnataka politics.

The chief minister’s visit to the deputy chief minister’s residence is largely seen as Mr Shivakumar gradually emerging as the successor to Mr Siddaramaiah, though there are a few aspirants, including Home Minister G Parameshwara (a Dalit leader), for the post.

On December 1, Mr Shivakumar termed the breakfast meeting with Mr Siddaramaiah as a matter ‘between brothers’, stressing that there was no groupism within the Congress government.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, the KPCC president said they would continue to meet often and discuss various political developments.

When asked about a trip to Delhi, Mr Shivakumar on December 1 said there was no plan to visit the national capital as of now.

Congress sources said that the high command is expected to summon both leaders to Delhi after the end of the winter session of Parliament, which is expected to conclude on December 19. By then, the winter session of the State legislature in Belagavi would have also ended.

The Congress top brass is expected to hold talks with both leaders on a whole range of issues in the State Congress, including leadership change in the government, a cabinet reshuffle and appointment of a new chief to the Karnataka Congress unit.
