GCTO accuses Kannur University of violating norms by fixing exams on Saturdays

The Government College Teacher’s Organisation (GCTO) has accused Kannur University of violating UGC regulations and the State government’s directive by scheduling university examination on two Saturdays in December. The move it said, reflects a continuing pattern of actions hostile to teachers.

Dr. Mummad Ashfas, State vice president, GCTO said the government norms allow only five working days a week, with Saturdays becoming working days only in emergencies such as natural disasters. Conducting exams on Saturday without such circumstances is neither academically nor legally acceptable, he said.

Dr. Ashfas said technical errors in the K-REAP software hindered timely completion of student’s exam registration, forcing the university to postpone exams scheduled for November twice and shift them to December. It added that the K-REAP system, implemented through MKCL, has caused persistent technical issues and mental stress for both teachers and students. The latest exams schedule it said, reflects the same disregard.

GCTO noted that univesity exams are usually planned with a day’s gap between papers. However, this time, instead of the usual Monday-Wednesday-Friday pattern, the timetable was arbitarily changed to Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday without justification.

The organisation said it will not cooperate with the exam scheduled on Saturday, December 6, and that its teachers will not report to colleges that day. It urged all college teachers to support the non cooperation protest.
