BJP Rajya Sabha member and national OBC president K. Laxman, on Thursday, accused the Congress government of showing double standards and betraying Backward Classes (BCs) by promising 42% reservations in local bodies but allotting only 17%.

At a press conference at the party office, he alleged that the ruling party had raised BCs hopes through caste census, surveys, quota reports, Assembly bills, protests in Delhi, ordinances, and GOs, only to “stab them in the back.”

“They spent ₹200 crore on the caste census survey. What happened? It was like digging a mountain and catching a rat. When elections were due in Maharashtra, Rahul Gandhi pushed Revanth Reddy to woo BC votes, and similar hurried, unscientific surveys were done in Telangana in the name of BC reservations,” Mr. Laxman claimed.

The BJP leader said the Congress party misled people with the Kamareddy Declaration, ignoring constitutional guidelines, Supreme Court restrictions, and existing laws for Assembly election gains. He alleged that the ongoing local elections were being held only to secure ₹2,300 crore in central funds, even while the BC reservation issue is under court review.

“Claiming to give 42% BC reservations to party candidates is misleading because local body elections don’t have party symbols,” he pointed out, calling upon people to teach Congress a lesson in the next elections for repeatedly betraying BCs.

Earlier, party vice president N.V.S.S. Prabhakar held a protest meeting at Uppal demanding relocation of the proposed STP from Uppal Lake to near the Musi River. He suggested upgrading the existing STP instead of building a new one and alleged misuse of Central funds.
