The Kerala High Court has directed the State government to clarify its stand on resuming construction of houses under the LIFE Mission housing project at Wadakkancherry in Thrissur district.

The construction company had halted work after the Central Bureau of Investigation launched a probe into the alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) on acceptance of foreign aid for the project.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Syam Kumar V.M. issued the order while hearing a petition filed by Congress leader Anil Akkara, who sought a directive to resume the project. He had submitted that 140 homeless families who were the intended beneficiaries of the project would be adversely affected if its completion was delayed any further.

Following the court’s earlier direction, the National Institute of Technology-Calicut had conducted a structural stability inspection and submitted that further construction could safely proceed. The government had said that there was no need to dismantle the apartments, despite concerns about the quality of their construction.
