An 81-year-old woman was killed and four others sustained injuries after a suspected LPG cylinder explosion at their house in KR Puram on Saturday (October 25) morning.

The impact of the explosion was so high that the house partially collapsed and three other houses in the neighbourhood developed cracks. Residents in and around Triveni Nagar were startled by the sound, which was reportedly heard up to four or five kilometres away.

The incident occurred at a house owned by Ramesh, who had rented it to Shekhar and his family about nine months ago. Shekhar, 55, lived there with his two children — Chandana, 22, and Kiran Kumar, 24 — and his elderly mother, Akkayyamma.

Fire and emergency personnel rushed to the spot and rescued Akkayyamma from the debris while the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. While Akkayyamma succumbed to her injuries, Chandana is critical.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 7.15 a.m. at Triveni Nagar. Akkayyamma was asleep when the roof slab collapsed on her owing to the impact of the explosion. Shekhar, Kiran Kumar, and a neighbour, Kanchana, 45, sustained injuries.

Shekhar told the police that the blast occurred when a family member switched on the stove. Police suspect that the gas leaked and accumulated in the house, causing an explosion. Fire and emergency service personnel, police and the Forensic Science Laboratory team are probing further to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.

According to police, residents in and around the area initially thought the sound was created by Deepavali firecrackers.

Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje and K.R. Puram constituency MLA Byrati Basavaraj visited the accident site and assured of the necessary help.
