A 75-year-old woman was rescued safely after her house collapsed in Sholinghur town in Ranipet on Wednesday due to continuous rain. Revenue officials said that the victim, S. Annam Ammal, was living alone in her house in Esayanur village. After continuous rain lashed the town over the last few days, the tiled roof of the house collapsed on the septuagenarian. The incident happened around 11.30 a.m.

Immediately, neighbours rescued her from the rubble. On being alerted, Sholinghur police inspected the spot and admitted her to Government Taluk Hospital in the town. Doctors at the hospital said she was stable. A case was registered.

Similarly, the retaining wall of Sri Yoga Anjaneya temple, atop a hillock in Sholinghur town, collapsed in the rain. The decades-old-wall is around 15 feet high. Police said no one was injured in the incident, which occurred around noon. Key towns, like Arakkonam, Arcot, Tiruvannamalai, Cheyyar, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ambur, and Arani witnessed continuous rain on Wednesday. Many low-lying areas were inundated.

In Tirupattur, residents staged a protest by planting saplings on pot-holed stretches in Kodumampalli village near Tirupattur town condemning official apathy to relay key roads. Likewise, residents in Ozur village near Amirthi Zoological Park in Vellore blocked Odugathur Main Road in protest against non-removal of encroachments around lakes.

Based on orders from Collector K. Tharpagaraj, a flood alert to villages along banks of Thenpennai river has been issued by the Water Resources Department (WRD), as 15,000 cusecs of water was being released from Sathanur dam.
