87% winners in Assam polls got votes above 50%, shows ADR study

Around 87% (110 candidates) of the winners in the recently held Assam Assembly elections won with 50% and above of the total votes polled in their constituency, while 13% (16 candidates) of those who won got less than 50% of the votes polled, according to an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

The analysis shows that all the victorious candidates won with an average of 58.11% of total votes polled as compared to 2021, when the winners got an average of 54.08% of the votes cast.

Also 16 (76%) out of 21 winners with declared criminal cases have won with a vote share of 50% and above and 94 (90%) out of 105 winners with clean backgrounds have won with a similar vote share.

Only two winners have won with a margin of victory of less than 3,000 votes while four winners had a margin of victory more than 50%. Fourteen out of 21 winners with declared criminal cases have won against a runner-up with a clean background.

Among the women candidates, Niso Terangpi (BJP) from Diphu constituency won with the highest vote share of 62.95%. She won with 49.62% representativeness and a 34.46% margin of victory.

Out of total 63 re-elected winners, none has won with less than 40% of vote share in their respective constituencies and 54 of them (86%) have won with more than 50% of vote share.

Only two re-elected winners have won with less than 10% margin of victory whereas two have won with more than 50% margin of victory.

Of the 2,16,64,898 votes polled in 2026 Assam Assembly Elections, 2,66,962 (1.23%) were polled for NOTA.
