The enforcement wing of the Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) has slapped a total fine of ₹1.9 lakh on owners of 14 tourist boats operating in and around Maradu. The violations were detected by officials of the Maritime Port Office, Kodungalloor, during inspections conducted in view of the tourist rush during the Christmas–New Year holidays.
“Major violations included the absence of valid survey certificates, insurance, and a qualified crew. Boats were also found carrying unusable life jackets and lifebuoys,” said Jofin Lukose, naval architect and surveyor, who conducted the inspections along with Kiran S., Port Conservator, Kodungalloor.
Show-cause notices were issued to operators who failed to comply with safety norms. Violations were also found in the ferry service run by the Maradu municipality on a contract basis between Nettoor and Thevara. Officials said safety inspections would continue in the coming days.
