As part of measures to promptly rectify power disruptions at night in Chennai and its suburbs due to faults at the distribution level and other reasons, 10 monitoring teams have been formed and 125 patrol vehicles deployed for rapid restoration of electricity supply, Minister for Energy Resources and Law R. Nirmalkumar said on Wednesday.
He flagged off the vehicles at the headquarters of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited in Chennai. Besides the existing Minnagam centres, 77 Fuse-off Call centres have been established, a release said.
The monitoring teams will oversee major power disruptions in real time, gather information regarding large-scale faults, monitor the progress of restoration works, and provide supply restoration updates to consumers. The teams will also identify areas with recurring faults to provide permanent solution.
Mr. Nirmalkumar told reporters that repeated incidents of power outages had been reported due to damaged electric cables and technical faults. In some places, anti-social elements had deliberately removed power fuses, he said.
To prevent such incidents from recurring, additional patrol teams and monitoring arrangements have been put in place. All complaints from the public were being addressed promptly, he said.
He also said there was no issue related to electricity generation or power shortage in the State. Due to a recent decline in wind power generation, there were a temporary impact in some places during peak hours. Most disruptions were due to technical faults in the distribution system, he said.
