The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg’s mysterious death expects to get CCTV footage and witness statements from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) within 10 days.

Garg died while swimming off an island in Singapore on September 19, hours before he was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival there.

Two members of the SIT, led by Special Director General of Police (Criminal Investigation Department) Munna Prasad Gupta, went to Singapore on October 20 and held a meeting with a five-member SPF team the next day.

“The meeting was fruitful. We exchanged information on the ongoing investigation,” he told journalists on Friday (October 24, 2025), the day after the SIT team returned to Guwahati.

SPF shares post-mortem report

He said the SPF shared Garg’s post-mortem report conducted in Singapore with the SIT through the Indian High Commission. “We told the Singapore Police that we needed their legal assistance, as we wanted to complete our investigation within a time frame. They said they would assist by staying within Singapore’s visa legal system,” Mr. Gupta said.

He further stated that the SIT visited several sites in Singapore connected to the case and conducted other legal work in that country. “We sought the Singapore Police’s help to get CCTV footage from the hotel [where Garg stayed], as the laws of the country prohibit us from taking it directly from the hotel management. The Singapore Police assured us that they would give a positive response within 10 days,” Mr Gupta said.

The SIT had earlier requested the Singapore authorities, through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, to provide the statements of some Singapore nationals deemed vital for the probe. “The Singapore police will record their statements and contact us within 10 days,” Mr Gupta said, declining to reveal what the probe team has found so far in the case.

He also said the SIT would file the charge-sheet in court within the time stipulated under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. “If required, we will summon the Singapore-based Assamese expatriates who were with Garg during his last moments,” he added.

The statements of more than 10 expatriates have been recorded in Assam.
