A person has been arrested on Monday for allegedly hacking a 31-year-old woman to death at Narsapuram in West Godavari district, the police said.
The incident happened on Sunday when the victim, Jalem Teena Roja, refused to accept her friend, Margani Ramesh’s proposal for marriage.
According to the police, Roja, a mother of two children, had been married for a decade. However, she was reportedly staying away from her husband due to personal disputes.
Ramesh, who returned from the Gulf, had proposed marriage while he was travelling with Roja to Sakhinetipalli in Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema district, in a car driven by their common friend, A. Suresh Babu.
Earlier, Suresh Babu had received Roja at Narsapuram railway station, and later the three headed to Sakhinetipalli.
According to the Narsapuram police, Ramesh allegedly attacked Roja when they had stopped by to have tea at a road side stall. “Ramesh attacked Roja with a knife leading to her death. Suresh Babu, also sustained injuries when he tried to prevent the attack. Roja was rushed to the government hospital, where she was declared brought dead,” Narsapuram Deputy Superintendent of Police M. Sudhakar said, adding that the accused had fled the scene after the incident but was nabbed subsequently.
“Ramesh, who was also injured during the attack, has been admitted to a government hospital for treatment. A case has been registered,” Mr. Sudhakar said.
