A 34-year-old woman was killed in a fire that broke out at her apartment owing to a suspected short circuit in east Bengaluru late on January 3 night.

The deceased has been identified as Sharmila, a resident of Subramanya Layout in the Ramamurthy Nagar police station limits.

According to the police, Sharmila, who hailed from Dakshina Kannada district, was working at a private firm in Bellandur.

The fire broke out a little after 10.50 p.m. on January 3. At the time of the incident, Sharmila was alone in the house as her roommate had gone to her hometown.

Neighbours, who noticed smoke billowing from the apartment, alerted the police and the fire department. Fire personnel rushed to the spot and doused the flames.

Police suspect that Sharmila died of asphyxiation after thick smoke engulfed the room where she was sleeping. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and further investigation is on.
