A 25-year-old woman was arrested for killing her three-month-old daughter by dumping her in a closed water sump at Ambur town in Tirupattur on Tuesday.

The arrested person was identified as A. Tazmeen, 25, a resident of Ambur. Initial inquiry revealed that Tazmeen was married to Akbar Basha, 30, a lorry driver. The couple has two children including a five-year-old daughter, and Tazmeen gave birth to her second daughter a few months ago, police said. The family moved to a rented house on EB Street in Ambur municipality a month ago. On Tuesday, the house owner found the body of the baby in the sump when he went to check the water level in it. He alerted Ambur Town police, who inspected the spot.

Investigations found that Tazmeen was frustrated over the responsibilities in taking care of her three children at a young age. Tazmeen told police that she reportedly threw the newborn baby in the sump out of frustration.

Following the incident, a case was registered by Ambur Town police and Tazmeen was arrested. The baby’s body was sent to Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore for a postmortem. Further probe is under way.
