Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday (September 25, 2025) said the State government would approach the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the Special Investigation Team (SIT) failed to unearth the facts behind the death of singer-composer Zubeen Garg in Singapore.

Hoping that the SIT would crack the case within a fortnight, he urged the people seeking justice for the departed Garg to exercise patience.

“The SIT needs some time as we have to bring back people (who were with Garg in Singapore). Instant justice will not stand in court,” the Chief Minister said, urging fans not to spread rumours on social media platforms.

“If anyone has any leads or material (linked to Garg’s death), please contact the Crime Investigation Department,” he said.

Musician being questioned

Earlier, the SIT took musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, who was present during the controversial yacht trip leading to Garg’s death, into custody for questioning. The officials, however, did not disclose the nature of the allegations against him or whether formal charges would be framed.

The SIT also visited the residence of Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, where Garg was scheduled to perform. The house of the singer-composer’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, was also searched.

Officials stated that a few members of the Assam Association of Singapore may be detained in connection with the case. The association had organised the trip.

Meanwhile, a reportedly distraught Garg fan jumped into the Brahmaputra River. Rescue workers are still searching for him.
