A wedding is the last thing one associates with the casualty wing of a hospital.

But that is exactly what the casualty wing of a private hospital here witnessed on Friday, after the bride and groom, along with their families, decided to go ahead with the marriage as scheduled despite the bride, Avani of Alappuzha, suffering serious spinal injuries in an accident earlier in the morning.

The hospital acceded to their request on humanitarian grounds and arranged for V.M. Sharon, a resident of Thumpoly in Alappuzha, to tie the knot in the casualty ward, in the presence of doctors and health workers, along with family members.

The marriage had been scheduled to take place in Thumpoly on Friday afternoon. Avani, along with two relatives, left home for Kumarakom around 3 a.m. for her bridal make-up. Their car went out of control and rammed into a tree.

The injured were rushed to Kottayam Medical College, but Avani was later shifted to VPS Lakeshore Hospital around noon. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Sharon and his family arrived at the hospital. The marriage was held between 12.15 p.m. and 12.30 p.m., the auspicious time originally fixed for the wedding.

The hospital authorities said that Ms. Avani’s spinal injury was serious and that she would soon undergo surgery.
