The Ernakulam district administration has banned the possession and carrying of weapons in view of the ongoing Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the Assembly elections.
It is part of the measures being taken to ensure a peaceful and fair conduct of polling. G. Priyanka, District Collector and District Magistrate, issued the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to maintain law and order.
Accordingly, the possession of weapons, including firearms, spears, swords, and lathis in public places is strictly prohibited until the declaration of election results. Strict legal action would be taken against those violating norms, a communication said.
Police personnel on duty, paramilitary forces, those using firearms for the safety and security of banks, and sportspersons participating in shooting events need to collect a special permission certificate from the authorities. There will be an exemption for sections that have the permission to display weapons as part of their religious or legal rights. The district screening committee will have powers to ask arms licence holders to deposit their weapons with the authorities, if such a step is required to ensure law and order.
Meeting held
Ms. Priyanka convened an all-party meeting in the presence of election observers on Tuesday (March 24) to explain the poll preparations and procedures. The district has a total of 3,148 polling stations. A webcasting facility has been implemented to ensure the safety of these stations. There are 14 polling stations managed by women officials in the district. There are 70 model polling stations. There are two booths managed by the differently abled, according to a communication.
The district administration urged political parties to use environment-friendly campaign materials and to avoid plastic, PVC flex boards, and banners. Action will be taken against those who violate the green protocol.
