Expressing condolences over the deaths due to the debris slip triggered by torrential monsoon rains at the construction area of the Meppadi-Kallady tunnel in Wayanad on Tuesday (July 7, 2026), Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan said that the incident is extremely tragic and shocking.

Mr. Vijayan said that urgent measures are required to pull out all the people trapped underground. He extended support for the measures taken by the government and the Disaster Management department.

“We share the grief of the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster. Immediate financial assistance should be provided to the dependents. The government should ensure free expert treatment and financial assistance to the injured. A serious investigation is required to determine whether there was any lapse and criminal negligence on the part of those concerned in taking emergency measures in this regard,” he said.
